Billing Models
Statutory Fees Under the RVG
For many engagements, billing follows the German Lawyers’ Remuneration Act (Rechtsanwaltsvergütungsgesetz, RVG). These statutory fees are based on the amount in dispute and the type of work:
- Court proceedings — statutory procedural fees
- Out-of-court representation — business and settlement fees
- Standardized engagements — clear statutory parameters
RVG fees give you legal certainty and are often the most economical solution in typical cases.
Individual Fee Agreement
For complex or extensive engagements, an individual fee agreement may be necessary:
Hourly billing:
- Billing by actual time spent
- Suited to engagements whose scope is hard to predict
- Transparent documentation of all work
- Regular interim invoices
Flat fee:
- A fixed amount for defined services
- Planning certainty and full cost transparency
- Especially suited to corporate engagements and recurring advice
- A clear description of the services and their scope
Which Billing Model, and When?

- Scope of the engagement — simple or complex?
- Predictability — is the workload foreseeable?
- Your preferences — flat fee or itemized billing?
- Type of work — litigation or advisory?
